Tocumen Airport to Casco Viejo: Every Way to Get There

Uber works well in Panama and is the cheapest comfortable option: roughly $25 to $35 to Casco Viejo, more during rain or peak hours. The catch is the pickup. Tocumen restricts app pickups at the arrivals curb, and drivers will often ask you to come up to the departures level — one floor up from baggage claim. Order the car once you are there, not while you are still waiting for your suitcase, and match the plate before getting in.

The regulated taxi desk in the arrivals hall sells a fixed-price ride, usually $30 to $40 to Casco Viejo for up to two or three passengers. It is more expensive than Uber and less predictable in quality, but it requires no phone, no app and no walk upstairs, and the price is agreed in writing before you leave. Always take the official desk rather than a driver who approaches you in the hall, and never negotiate an unmetered ride on the curb.

The Corredor Sur bus runs from the airport to the Albrook terminal for a couple of dollars, but it requires a rechargeable tarjeta Metrobús card (cash is not accepted on board), takes over an hour, and then leaves you with a second leg to Casco. The Metro's Line 2 connects to the airport and links to Line 1 at San Miguelito, which is a genuine option if you travel light: total fare under two dollars, journey around 90 minutes with the transfer, then a short taxi from Cinco de Mayo. With suitcases, in humidity, it is a false economy.

Panama City traffic is severe from 6:30 to 9:00 in the morning and from 16:00 to 19:00. In those windows add twenty to thirty minutes. The drive itself is on the Corredor Sur, an elevated toll road along the bay, and it is one of the better airport approaches anywhere — the skyline arrives all at once.

Immigration is usually quick; most North American, EU, UK and Australian passport holders enter visa-free for up to 180 days, with proof of onward travel occasionally requested. There are ATMs and SIM counters after customs. Bring small bills: Panama uses the US dollar (locally the Balboa, pegged 1:1), and drivers rarely break a fifty.

Once you reach Casco Viejo, vehicle access to the core is restricted and the streets are narrow colonial cobblestone, so your driver may stop a few doors from the address. Nothing in the district is more than a few minutes' walk.

Leaving, allow 45 minutes to the airport outside rush hour and 75 during it. Tocumen asks for three hours before international departures and the security queue genuinely can take an hour at peak. Uber back is usually a few dollars cheaper than the ride in.
